On September 26, Vietnam Digital Content Creation Alliance (DCCA) in collaboration with Thu Do Multimedia Company organized a seminar “Solving the problem of copyright protection for the music – film industry – digital television”.
The discussion received a lot of attention from the press, in which the Electronic Magazine Information and Communication ictvietnam.vn also had an article sharing:
The digital revolution is bringing unprecedented challenges in content security and copyright protection, requiring new solutions to protect content from a variety of copyright infringement risks.
On September 26, Vietnam Digital Content Creation Alliance (NDS) (DCCA) in collaboration with Thu Do Multimedia Company organized a seminar “Solving the problem of copyright protection for the music – film industry – digital television”.
The discussion shared information about the current situation of copyright infringement in NDS in general, as well as the music, film and digital television industry in particular, and discussed difficulties in applying solutions, prevent and stop copyright infringements.
Nearly 1,000 pirated football websites have been blocked in 1 year
In the context of extremely vibrant digital content distribution, the rapid development of OTT (Over-The-Top) television platforms and online movie publishers has brought users to a new era. A completely new era of consuming entertainment content. The convenience of accessing movies, TV shows, and live music events on devices has transformed the way audiences interact with content.
However, this digital revolution also brings unprecedented challenges in content security and copyright protection, requiring the creation of new solutions to protect content from a variety of intrusion risks. copyright damage.
Mr. Pham Hoang Hai, Director of the NDS Copyright Center, Department of Broadcasting, Television and Electronic Information (PTTH&TTĐT), Ministry of Information and Communications (TT&TT), said that the current situation of VPBQ is extremely complicated.
According to the information shared by Mr. Hai during the seminar, SimilarWeb’s statistics reveal that there are 70 pirated websites in total. Among these, the top 5 pirated websites garnered more than 1.5 billion views during the 2022/2023 football season, attracting a user base of 7 million.
Regarding pirated movie websites, there are more than 200 pirated movie websites attracting about 120 million views/month, of which the top 10 pirated movie websites have more than 66 million views/month. The characteristics of these pirated websites are the use of international domain names and information hiding services; Pirated websites operate openly, showing all content from sports to movies, and constantly changing domain names when blocked. Websites often have malicious advertising and betting.
Many measures to protect NDS copyright have been implemented, from technical solutions such as blocking domain names or administrative solutions such as fines. Mr. Pham Hoang Hai said that during the period from August 2022 to August 2023, nearly 1,000 illegal football websites were blocked. After applying measures to prevent access to pirated websites, the number of VPBQ links has decreased by 7% (according to Premier League statistics); Visits of blocked websites decreased by 98% (According to Premier League and SimilarWeb); 23% of Vietnamese Internet users responded that they would not access pirated websites or would rarely access them due to the impact of blocking access.
Mr. Vu Kiem Van, Vice President, General Secretary of the Vietnam Digital Communications Association (VDCA), said that many professional social organizations and businesses specializing in copyright exploitation and protection have been established, focusing on fields such as movies, music, games…, creating an increasingly large force, joining hands to contribute to the protection of digital copyright. After a period of communication and sharing experiences and knowledge, the awareness of copyright protection of the Vietnamese business community has improved.
Many units have paid more attention to copyright protection and invested in development work. Many units have provided technology solutions to support copyright protection activities.
Vulnerabilities of digital copyright protection solutions
However, the currently applied measures still have shortcomings. For example, measures and actions and blocking times are not consistent between ISPs. Some ISPs block immediately but some ISPs block after 3 working days or longer. Blocking measures are also not flexible to deal with new domain names.
Lawyer Pham Thu Thuy, in charge of fighting against K+’s VPBQ, said that an English Premier League match is shown on K+ channel and K+’s co-distribution units, but the match is also shown on pirated websites and applications.
Ms. Thuy announced a “quite startling” number, when according to statistics, the rate of VPBQ in Vietnam ranks third in the region with 15.5 million people regularly accessing pirated websites.
“For businesses that own content copyrights, if only 10% of those 15.5 million pirated viewers convert into legal subscribers, businesses can use that money to reinvest in other businesses. more valuable, better products and content or buy special products, sports content, and movies. And from having the funds to buy good content, it can also create jobs in the creative industry. That means, a lot of services follow, if we protect copyright well,” said Lawyer Pham Thu Thuy.
Digital rights management (DRM) solutions such as Widevine, FairPlay and PlayReady have been deployed to prevent unauthorized access and distribution, but current copyright protection solutions are still insufficient to protect and needs a multi-dimensional approach to address existing risks. In particular, the problem that content providers face in DRM vulnerabilities is deceiving the license server and bypassing authentication to grant permission to retrieve content for accounts that are not trusted enough.
In addition to DRM vulnerabilities, OTT television providers and online publishers also face a series of other risks such as the problem of using screen recording devices for playback or exploiting networks. virtual private (VPN) to circumvent geo-restrictions, allowing access to content from one country to distribute unauthorized content in another…
Applying AI to protect digital copyright more comprehensively
Faced with the problem of NDS Security Office, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Han, General Director of Thu Do Multimedia, shared the Sigma Multi-DRM solution integrating artificial intelligence (AI) in copyright protection, the solution has the trade name Sigma Active Observer – (SAO), helps content owners and online content publishing platforms protect copyright of content products on the Internet.
This is an innovative solution that goes beyond the limitations of traditional DRM solutions, providing a flexible and active defense mechanism that proactively detects and notifies security threats.
The “heart” of Sigma Multi-DRM is SAO, a powerful software toolset that redefines content security. SAO is not simply a security layer of Sigma Multi-DRM but also oversees the monitoring of every aspect of content delivery and streaming. Using advanced AI algorithms, SAO goes further in detecting and reviewing all data exchange activities during content distribution on the Internet.
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Han’s introduction, SAO is a comprehensive set of protection solutions, with features such as:
Multidimensional threat detection: SAO uses AI-driven algorithms to identify anomalies and potential threats at every step, including detecting cross-border distribution breaches.
VPN Detection and Elimination: SAO can identify VPN usage and eliminate exploit attempts to access content across different regions. This proactive measure removes geo-restrictions and cuts down on cross-border access to unauthorized content.
Resistance to information tampering: SAO’s AI algorithm recognizes signs of information tampering, repelling attempts to deceive the license server.
Analyze user behavior: SAO drills down into user behavior patterns, identifies suspicious activities, and prevents interference. For access requests with mismatched information, for example, an access request in Hanoi but with user information in another province, these accesses will be reviewed,…
Real-time information: SAO’s AI technology ensures real-time information collection and response, allowing operators to quickly confront threats.
By applying SAO solutions, content providers can protect exclusive content, enhance brand reputation, optimize revenue as well as be proactive in security issues, because SAO not only protects but also observes and warns against threats, bringing proactiveness to content providers./.
